Davian Varley slept well that night. He was excited, but at peace with his decision.

Preparation

Mangum, Stavros, Dent, Pendergast, Sam, and Jules were not idle those three days. There were preparations to make. The evening of the day Davian Varley told Sam he had decided to make the attempt, Mangum reviewed their activities with the team.

“Gloria? Whatcha got?” Mangum asked.

“I got the boat manufacturer and model number from the camera Sam went out there with two days ago. He also took pictures under the dashboard.”

“On a boat, it’s an instrument panel,” Pendergast put in.

“Whatever. The thingy. I verified from the picture the wiring is all stock. And, I have a replacement ignition switch.”

Dent held up an ignition switch, the keys in it, and waggled it back and forth.

“I’m surprised it isn’t a bio-lock,” Mangum said.

“Oh, it has that, too, but boat stuff is very old fashioned. Ocean water affects fancy things in the strangest ways. Then they don’t work and you’re stuck. In any case, we have a replacement switch.”

Mangum nodded.

“Chuck?”

“I have a boat rented for tomorrow. Small-talked the idea I was running down to Malibu to pick up my uncle and his grandson.”

“A fast boat?”

“Yeah. I paid a bunch extra for that.”

“That’s OK. It’s worth it. Sam?”

“I get to the boat early, effect the change of the ignition switch, then wait out of sight for Professor Varley. When he shows up, I tell him to just sit on the dock and enjoy the day until my associate shows up.

“Once Jules arrives, we head for the mainland.”

“Jules?”

“The guards are all mine,” he said, fondling the tranquilizer dart gun.

“Try not to get caught on surveillance video. We don’t know who’s watching off-island, if anybody.”

“I understand. Gloria hacked into their camera system and alarm system. I know where all the cameras are based on those views.”

“Elina?”

“I stay here with Gloria and we monitor the video and alarm systems so we can let you know if the alert has gone up.”

“When it goes up. There’s going to be a manhunt for Varley.”

“Yes, but the idea is to have that kick off once he is already back here.”

“Correct.”

Mangum ran down his list once more.

“And the radio locator?”

“I have the sender,” Sam said.

“And I have the receiver,” Pendergast said.

“What about Jules?”

“Oh, you don’t need to worry about us, Bert,” Jules said. “We won’t have any trouble finding each other.”

“OK. Good. We actually sound like we’re more or less ready.”
